Some cool jumping photos shot in the studio.

We’ve been busy lately shooting a whole range of different subjects, shooting product photos and business portraits – both in the studio and on location. We’ve just finished a really cool shoot today shooting some jump images of designer James Hogg.

We ran it through Aperture 3 and Nik’s Color Effex 3 and we’re very pleased with the end result! We used two Profoto Acute D4 heads to get the result. One gridded and painting the cove with a narrow beam of light, and the other with a 3x4ft softbox aiming straight at James from behind and slightly above.

Some favourites from 2010.

Browsing through the back catalogue of photos from 2010 there’ve been some great shoots in the studio. Portrait shots for Forbes, room sets for CP Group and some fun shoots with the Workhouse staff, to name but a few. Not only that but I’ve been lucky enough to go out on location with many of our clients.

Here’s just a selection of some of my favourite work from last year.

Workhouse Studios: Client Testimonial.

Following on from our recent post about having a great start to the year, yesterday we received this fantastic testimonial from Jayne Adamson at CP Group:

“When we decided to develop this exciting new range we wanted to ensure that the things we loved about it weren’t lost in translation along the line.  That’s why we needed to work with a photographic studio that understood the concept and loved it as much as we did.  Workhouse certainly delivered by creating cool, striking room sets that showed off the product perfectly.”

Fact File: What is an Infinity Cove.

One of the aspects of our studio I am asked most about is the infinity cove or cyclorama. Just what is an infinity cove/cyclorama and what benefit can it have to your product photography/photography.

An infinity cove is primarily an all white space with no corners (sometimes they can be painted other colours such as grey), this is designed to make the background of an object look like it goes on for infinity. Photographing on an infinity cove is very popular in commercial and advertising photography.

Shooting on an infinity cove also makes it very easy to cut out a product for use in brochures and on the web.

A basic infinity curve can be created out of seamless white paper supported from a background stand. This can be good when you are photographing a small product or single person, but for larger items or groups it can be problematic. This is where a proper infinity cove comes into its own.

Workhouse Studios has a large corner infinity cove, which measures 6m x 6m by 4m. This is one of the largest infinity coves in the North West and makes Workhouse Studios a very versatile shooting space.

The cove is plenty big enough for car photography – we’ve had a Ferrari F430  and a Bentley Flying Spur on it amongst others and can also hold large groups of people – fitting 30 people of for a large group photo is no problem.

Check out some images taken on the infinity cove at Workhouse Studios below:

Forbes Photoshoot.

Last week Forbes returned to Workhouse Studios for another photoshoot. This one was larger than previous shoots with more people to photograph. The shoot went really well and here’s one of the shots from the shoot:

Shooting wine in the studio.

It’s been a busy start to the week so far. I’ve spent the first part of the week shooting lots of wine and beer in the studio for one of our clients. It’s been a fun shoot with a clean white background allowing the product to leap off the page. Here’s one of the images, a lovely bottle of Vistamar Pinot Noir.

Mortimers Photoshoot

A couple of weeks ago we were shooting some portraits in the studio for a client of ours, Mortimers. It was a great shoot and below is one of the edited photos.

For the shot above we’ve gone for a bit of an edgy cross processed look on this shot to create something a little different.

New location photos added to the gallery.

After another couple of busy, productive weeks we’ve updated our location photography section of the website with some recent images.
We shot the first set of images below on location during a day long shoot for one of our clients, Daniel Thwaites. It was a great day, we were really lucky with the weather (which helped as we were shooting both indoors and out) had some great people to shoot and got some cracking images at the end of it.

Another client of ours, newly opened The Whalley Wine Shop. Tom Jones is the MD and has decided to open his own, independent shop after the Threshers he was previously managing closed down. The Whalley Wine Shop is concentrating on a range of quality wines at an affordable price, whilst delivering high levels of customer service.

We were delighted when Tom asked Workhouse Studios to take some photos of the newly refurbished store.

Workhouse Photowalk

A couple of weeks ago Steven and I went on the first Workhouse Photowalk of 2010. We decided to do the first half of the Tolkein Trail one Friday morning before work.
Photowalks are a great and social way of getting out and about with your camera and as the examples below show, you don’t have to travel miles to get some good shots.
